Leading by Example: Courageous Conversations, Education & Developing an Inclusive Culture

Challenge

As the advocacy organization for the independent financial services industry, FSI is uniquely positioned to help address the underrepresentation of women and people of color within the industry. However, we must lead by example by growing our understanding, as a team, of diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in the workplace and fostering a more inclusive culture within our organization.

Actions

In September 2019, our staff began an educational journey together, working with the Center for Workforce Excellence. Through all-staff workshops and small-group discussions, our team has been learning about unconscious bias, allyship, and privilege. We have also explored how to have courageous conversations and address D&I issues in our workplace and communities.

Outcomes

This is an ongoing journey. So far, it has led to constructive conversations around race and equality, both in the office and in our personal lives. We support each other in our own educational journeys by sharing informative resources, including news articles, books, and thought-provoking movies. In addition, we have also adopted policy changes to establish more equitable practices, such as blinding resumes and allowing  flexible work arrangements.

The American Dream is for each and every American, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or background. At the Financial Services Institute (FSI), our mission is to ensure ALL Americans have access to the affordable, professional financial advice they need to achieve their dreams. We will continue to champion efforts that drive diversity, equity, and inclusion in the financial services industry and beyond.

In order to be successful in this mission, we must all be part of the solution. I am committed to learning, listening, and finding meaningful ways to achieve justice for all.
