Inclusive Education and Training at John Wiley & Sons

Challenge

To understand bias and foster inclusion among our global colleagues, customers, and communities – ultimately – to celebrate the diverse thinking that advances knowledge and learning and is the best chance for us to solve the world’s toughest challenges.

Actions

We are committed to providing all colleagues with the opportunity to participate in conversations and training on understanding bias and fostering inclusion. Training and development programs underway include:

  • More than 100 senior leaders participated in MicroInequities: Managing Unconscious Bias™, a diversity and leadership seminar led by Stephen Young (former Chief Diversity Officer at JP Morgan Chase and VP for Diversity at Merrill Lynch), to learn how to identify bias and practice inclusive leadership.
  • Our Education Services business launched DEI training in April 2020 for all colleagues, completed by 94% of colleagues and supplemented by a series of dialogue sessions on themes including identity, intersectionality, power, and allyship. Two more courses on Harassment & Discrimination and Managing Bias were launched in October 2020 and were supplemented by a dialogue session on Micro-Interventions.
  • We launched the 21-Day DEI challenge, inviting colleagues to complete one short assignment a day for 21 days to become more mindful, compassionate, constructive and engaged in identifying inequity and practicing equity and inclusivity in daily interactions.
Outcomes

Data collected from participation in our training programs and analysis changes in behaviors and practices over time will inform baselines that we will use to measure progress and define future actions.
