Challenge

To take a deeper dive into understanding the many dimensions of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEi) in the workplace and to provide employees with the foundation to engage in intentional conversations about culture and inclusion at Masonite.

Actions

As Masonite continues to focus on its DEi strategy, over 100 employees took advantage of a unique opportunity to learn more about DEi in the workplace by attending a 7-week certificate program offered by the University of South Florida. The curriculum modules included learnings related to Emotional Intelligence, Stereotypes & Biases, Understanding Your Organization, the Future of your Organization Through DEi, Recruitment & Retention, Community Outreach, and developing a Sustainable Business Model. Following each module of the program, Masonite employees were invited to participate in an open discussion and debrief their learnings and share their point of view on each topic. In addition, we also started a Yammer community where employees can continue the discussion, ask questions and foster an environment of curiosity and understanding.

Outcomes

people around the world are having difficult conversations about inclusion, race and justice, some professionals struggle with knowing what to say or how to say it in the workplace. Through the USF program and our internal discussion forum, we were able to open an effective dialogue at work to share experiences and highlight some of the barriers that make talking about DEi so challenging. This has been a successful beginning to our journey to acknowledge and validate our differences, to use curiosity to open-up dialogue, and to work together to Hold the Door Open to everyone.
