Engaging our Board of Directors

Challenge

One of six agencies of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the Board of Pensions was challenged to advance the reach of its internal Diversity, Equity and, Inclusion (DEI) work to include external constituencies.

Actions

The agency’s Board of Directors established a task force on diversity, equity, and inclusion in October 2020, and identified its scope of work:

  • Advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion by expanding and deepening the reach of agency programs and communications among historically underserved constituencies in the Church
  • Studying agency data collection and privacy policies as they relate to diverse constituencies
  • Considering potential changes or enhancements to the Assistance Program that could further support diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
  • Reviewing agency policies in support of diversity, equity, and inclusion with third-party vendors and consultants
Outcomes

Recognized for making diversity and inclusion a priority with a 2020 NACD NXT award.

The National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD), whose membership represents over half of the Fortune 1000, presented the award.

• Identification of ongoing priorities:

  • Enhancing the Board of Directors, which is 35 percent people of color and intentionally diverse in gender, sexual orientation, and ethnicity, by making it even more inclusive
  • Expanding the diversity of Board of Pensions leadership
Quote

Diversity, equity, and inclusion serve a key place in our work … we all still have work to do, but I am optimistic about what we hope to accomplish.
