Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Education and Training

Challenge

Tennant Company is focused on building an inclusive work environment. To achieve this, Tennant recognizes the importance of DE&I education and training to build a common foundational knowledge and develop inclusive behaviors and skills.  In reviewing our standard training programs, these did not effectively address this opportunity.

Actions

In 2021, Tennant Company developed and launched two comprehensive DE&I learning journeys for leadership and HR focused on building an inclusive environment.  Each learning journey begins with an illustration of the Tennant business case around DE&I, followed by training to establish common language and develop inclusion skills; while working to build organizational and individual competency.

Our learning journeys include facilitated training, discussion groups, and application of the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI).  For our live, facilitated training, we partnered with a reputable external company to provide training on a variety of topics including understanding differences, bias, and building and leading inclusively.  The IDI is used to help employees understand how they navigate cultural differences and how they can further build their intercultural competency.  Lastly, our discussion groups provide a space for our teams to discuss key DE&I topics, reinforce learnings, and identify ways to apply these learnings and insights to our business.

Outcomes

Since the launch of the program, our top 70+ global leaders and 70+ global human resources team members have participated in the DE&I learning journeys.  This has created a common foundation for teams to discuss inclusion concepts, learn how to navigate cultural differences, and inform our next steps for ongoing education.
