Conduct Unconscious Bias Training

Challenge

Increase Unconscious Bias training across the health system.

Actions

Develop and implement an Unconscious Bias and Respectful Care training for Henry Ford Team Members.

Outcomes

In 2020, Henry Ford Health System (Henry Ford) developed and implemented an Unconscious Bias and Respectful Care training for all Women's Health Services team members at Henry Ford Hospital and contributing ambulatory sites. The training, which included a three-hour interactive session along with onehour of pre-work, was funded by Merck for Mothers as part of the Better Maternal Outcomes Initiative with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Through these trainings, in which approximately 350 team members participated, Henry Ford was able to raise awareness of unconscious bias in healthcare and provide strategies for our team members to address those biases and provide more equitable care.

While this work was underway, Michigan's Governor signed an executive directive to require implicit bias training for all licensed and registered healthcare professionals in the state. Henry Ford subject matter experts engaged with the administration during the rulemaking process to help determine relevant goals. The system is now working to revise and expand our Unconscious Bias and Respectful Care training curriculum to be available to providers throughout the state to meet the new state requirements, which go into effect next year.

The interactive training experience represents another important step on our journey to build a culture of equity. Our multi-faceted approach will continue to leverage existing and emerging efforts. While equity is key, it is a critical step toward reaching destination justice.
