Affinity Networks at Bridgewater

Challenge

At Bridgewater we believe our differences positively impact both our meaningful work (allowing us to tackle problems in innovative ways) and meaningful relationships (understanding what makes our people tick). At the same time, we want to maintain our sense of being one community. Differences inform what we bring to the table, but it’s critical that the table be inclusive for everyone.

Actions

We have four employee affinity networks open to every member of the firm – a Women’s Network, a Black Network, a Hispanic and Latinx Network and a LGBTQ+ Network – to help build connections and stimulate dialogue.

  • The Women's Influence Network (WIN) strives to empower women through networking and development opportunities that help to establish and enable lasting relationships in the community. Throughout the year, WIN runs a series of events including information sessions, a speaker series, book clubs, community service opportunities, and workshops targeting the specific developmental needs of network members and allies. The speaker series has highlighted examples of successful leaders who have risen to the top of their field, including Indra Nooyi, Sallie Krawcheck, and Valerie Rainford. • The Bridgewater Black Network (BBN) connects, educates, and enriches the Black community as well as the larger Bridgewater community. BBN hosts a multitude of events and programs throughout the year to engender rich cultural and developmental experiences, including talks on our campus with former Governor Deval Patrick and educator Geoffrey Canada. Amidst a national groundswell in conversation about racial injustice that arose in 2020 and as we continue to work through how to more deeply engage and support our employees on these issues in the long term, the BBN and its allies invited the entire firm to an internal conversation focused on the lived experience of our Black Colleagues and this country’s history of systemic racism.
  • The Bridgewater Hispanic and Latinx Network (HLN) aims to connect, enrich, and advance the experience of members of our Hispanic and Latin American community. To achieve this mission, they focus on creating opportunities to build stronger connections with one another — understanding and celebrating the diverse history and culture of our regions and offering unique development opportunities. As part of their annual celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, HLN hosts “How We Got Here”, an event where members of the Bridgewater community share stories highlighting the ways in which immigration had impacted them and the people they love.
  • The Bridgewater B Proud (LGBTQ+) Network connects and empowers LGBTQ+ employees and their allies to be authentic and inclusive leaders. Through professional growth, community building, and educational programs, they seek to attract the world's best LGBTQ+ talent, help build sustainable value for our people, and foster meaningful partnerships with external organizations and communities. The B Proud network and leadership team played an instrumental role in helping Bridgewater achieve a top score of 100 on HRC’s Corporate Equality Index as a Top Workplace for LGBTQ+ Talent.
Outcomes

Each network has a senior sponsor, a leadership team of 5-7 people, and 100-400 members per group. These networks are open to all members of Bridgewater community, regardless of how they identify. In addition to offering hundreds of opportunities to engage, the networks directly inform and advise Bridgewater’s diversity and inclusion strategies.
