Women's Leadership

Challenge

Provide a platform for the women of MITRE to connect and engage.

Actions

For six years, MITRE has held an annual Women's Leadership Conference that has continuously attracted upwards of 500 attendees — both women and men, from MITRE sites around the country. The event provides a full day of learning from invited speakers, networking, and interactions with senior leaders. We also hold an "open mic" session where selected participants can share their personal stories of challenge and triumph. Response to their event  has been overwhelmingly positive, with attendees praising it as a powerful day offering solidarity, camaraderie, inspiration, and motivation.

In addition to the annual Women's Leadership Conference, MITRE offers several related activities that are women-focused, including

  • Women's Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon: New in 2017, employees on our McLean campus contributed to Wikipedia as part of our celebration of Women's History Month by encouraging more women in STEM to help grow Wikipedia entries about women scientists.
  • Networking for Professional Women: This affinity group was started to provide an avenue for MITRE women to network and get professional development.
  • Young Women in Engineering: Since 2006, hundreds of female students have visited MITRE to learn about engineering during "Young Women in Engineering Day." It's an opportunity for students to soak up the collective wisdom of highly accomplished women engineers at MITRE who talk to them about their work both individually and in groups.
Outcomes

Response to the annual conference and associated activities has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants praising them as powerful opportunities that offer solidarity, camaraderie, inspiration, and motivation.
