Women in Leadership at Vail Resorts

Challenge

The ski industry has traditionally been male dominated, particularly in senior leadership roles. At Vail Resorts, we’ve prioritized creating an environment that encourages and enables growth opportunities for women at all levels of the company.

Actions

Intentional representation in leadership roles is critical to creating an inclusive culture. The company has invested heavily in leadership development programs, including those designed to advance women throughout our business.

  • Women in Leadership: Designed to provide a dedicated space for leading women throughout the company, the program invested in the development of high-performing senior leaders. For women selected to participate, it offered a unique forum with space to explore leadership discussion with peers.
  • POWDER: Launched in March 2018, Providing Opportunity for Women through Diversity, Equality and Respect, was an enterprise-wide platform aimed to foster an inclusive culture to attract and retain a broad range of exceptional talent and promote diverse leadership growth opportunities.
  • In our first year of POWDER, we focused on awareness, both individually and as an organization—understanding that space for insight is an important part of progress. One of our most popular events featured the theme of unconscious bias. Participants took Harvard’s Implicit Bias Test, dug into why biases exist, learned what their blind spots may be, and brainstormed how to mitigate them.
  • Initially focused on gender equity, POWDER has since expanded to include all forms of diversity through Leading Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Our vision is to foster an inclusive culture, where all forms of diversity are valued and celebrated.
Outcomes
  • Four out of nine of the company’s Board of Directors are women. In a recent ranking by Denver Business Journal, Vail Resorts was included as one of the top two publicly-traded companies in the state for the number of women on our board (44%).
  • A third of our Executive Committee (senior leadership) are women.
  • We’re also proud to have so many women in operational leadership. In each regional division of the company— Western, Rocky Mountain, Midwest, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic—there are women running resorts. In Colorado, three out of five Vail Resorts’ mountains are run by women.
  • In 2020, Vail Resorts was named one of “America’s Best Employers for Women” by Forbesfor the second year in a row. This recognition, which considers survey responses from 75,000 U.S. employees as well as a review of diversity in top executive positions, highlights our continued efforts to advance women in leadership.
