Women in Leadership at BBVA USA

Challenge

We recognized that a significant number of female employees are underrepresented in higher levels of leadership at our organization.

Actions

In 2017, BBVA USA launched its first business resource group (BRG), Women in Leadership, to increase engagement for women and provide a forum for mentorship, professional development and networking. We knew that through this business resource group, there was an opportunity to reduce female turn-over, promote more women to senior management positions, and provide leadership development opportunities for women. The first Women in Leadership chapter started in Houston, Texas, and has since expanded to Birmingham, AL (2018), and New York, NY (2019).

Outcomes

As of 12/31/2019, there were 555 members of Women in Leadership in three cities with 82% female and 18% male membership. Activities have included networking events, panel discussions, guest speaker engagements, conference attendance, mentorship, book clubs, support groups (medical, parental, etc.), and community volunteering. In 2020, there are plans to expand Women in Leadership chapters in Dallas, Texas, Jacksonville, Florida and Phoenix, Arizona. Due to the success of Women in Leadership, BBVA USA also has plans to launch an LGBTQ business resource group in 2020.
