Veterans Initiatives

Challenge

To become a military-friendly employer and invest in the success and wellbeing of its veteran employees, Scripps leads several initiatives to hire veterans and to support them, their families and others in the military community.

Actions

Part of the EDI strategy at Scripps is to invite employees to voluntarily share if they identify in certain demographic categories to help set realistic goals and monitor the company’s progress under the “Stand up and be counted” initiative. While military-affiliated employees were the first focus, which included active military, veterans and/or spouses/partners, it has since been expanded to include the remaining pillars.

Scripps also hosted its first veteran-focused Welcome Table event with Louis Advisors, LLC, Matthew Louis, one of the nation’s leading experts in career transition for veterans and public service professionals. The event discussed how military skills transfer to corporate America and what hiring managers should look for in a resume to see those transferable skills. Employees also learned what hurdles veterans may face when they transition, and the biggest differences in military versus civilian life. A Scripps employee and veteran also spoke about his personal experience transitioning from military to civilian life.

Outcomes

Scripps recruiters receive training on identifying transferable skills and ensuring the candidate experience is inclusive. The company also attends military career fairs and has many partnerships with military-affiliated organizations like the Disabled American Veterans, a nonprofit charity that provides a lifetime of support for veterans of all generations and their families.

Quote

We want to become a leading media employer for reservists and transitioning veterans through our recruitment and programs that highlight transferable skills. Hiring veterans isn’t just about supporting the men and women who served our country – it’s a positive business decision.
