Unconscious Bias Training at Karius

Challenge

We all have biases. How they show up at work can be a significant obstacle to achieving inclusion in the workplace.

Actions

Karius sought a credible training vendor to provide top notch training on unconscious bias. The course was designed to leverage the most recent behavioral research to illustrate the power and impact of implicit associations, microaggressions, and privilege on the employee experience. To get people thinking about their own actions, the training shows emotionally provocative video scenes and triggers engagement by showing how other people react to those scenes. We anonymously share others’ questions and perspectives on various bias concepts. By seeing the opinions, perspectives, and experiences of the global community, employees can safely compare their experiences and perspectives against others to see if their views are mainstream (or not) and that adds to the learning experience. The course then provides tools and practices to reduce unconscious bias and create a more inclusive workplace culture.

Outcomes

The training was designed to trigger behavior change, not just raise awareness. We change behavior by having employees develop and practice new people skills and make stronger people decisions. All employees at Karius have completed this training and it is given as part of our new hire training program.

Alec Ford, CEO

An inclusive workplace isn’t an abstract idea; it’s a day-to day reality where the actions of each individual add up to a culture. Shifting a reality for a growing organization means that my opinion as a CEO doesn’t matter nearly as much as the attitudes and behaviors of the people contributing to our mission at Karius.
