Unconscious Bias: Navigating Our Blind Spots

Challenge

To create an inclusive environment and a sense of belonging, the first step is to understand the factors that prevent it. Biases are important and is our way to sense making, however when does it impair judgement. Understanding and building checks towards not allowing biases to affect inclusion is a critical step.

Actions

Acknowledging that inherent biases are a reason that hinders the development of individuals and communities, SABIC empowered its Employee Resource Group “Young SABIC professionals (YSP)” and select leaders to lead and conduct awareness sessions on understanding Implicit Bias. Four sessions were facilitated by employee groups that represent the diversity of SABIC employees. The facilitators were intentionally chosen to imply that bias applies to all levels of the organization and ground rules were established to create a safe environment. The session encouraged participants to take the Implicit Association Test (IAT) to understand their biases. The results of the session were discussed and reflections shared. This was followed by identifying an “Accountability Partner” to work together on managing blind spots.

Outcomes

Greater employee ownership was achieved due to this initiative being driven by YSP. Around 50 participants have an increased awareness of biases and the realization of their impact on work culture. Authentic and courageous conversations have started which will lead to a more inclusive work environment.
