UHG Military Internship Program

Challenge

More than a million U.S. military service members will enter the civilian workforce in the next several years. When transitioning to civilian life, service members often face significant challenges translating their military skills and experiences into meaningful employment.

Actions

In partnership with the Department of Defense SkillBridge Program, UnitedHealth Group Military Internships provide career skills training and workforce reintegration to transitioning active duty service members across all branches of the U.S. Military. The Military Internship Program is an innovative and collaborative approach between UnitedHealth Group and the U.S. Military, open to transitioning active duty service members across all branches.

While helping to ensure we have the right talent in place to meet future growth, military interns have the opportunity to obtain career skills, gain a deep understanding of our company’s culture, and experience a quality reintegration that includes a mentoring process to accelerate the transition into the workplace. Internship tracks include Business & Finance Operations, Clinical Operations, Customer Service, and Information Technology.

Outcomes

The program has successfully converted 77% of interns into UnitedHealth Group employees with 91% retention to date, and continues to grow with commitments to additional placements across the enterprise. In association with efforts like this, UnitedHealth Group is proud to be designated as a 2019 Military Friendly Employer by VIQTORY, a service-disabled, veteran-owned small business.
