Training Our Staff for Serving the Incarcerated LGBTQ+ Community

Challenge

Centurion supports all individuals in reaching their maximum potential in every aspect of the business, including employee recruitment, supplier recruitment, hiring, subcontracting, EEOC compliance, and cultural sensitivity and acuity. As a robust complement to our standard New Employee Orientation and role-specific training, we ai to develop cultural competency among staff through ongoing education on the medical, mental health, and emotional needs of the incarcerated LGBTQ+ community.

Actions

Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Centurion University connects employees to numerous courses that address the healthcare, social, and emotional needs of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer members of our patient population. While speaking to a specific topic, each course guides employees in improving their ability to understand the unique needs of the LGBTQ+ population and providing affirming, compassionate care that addresses those needs. They familiarize staff with the LGBTQ+ community, review foundational terms and issues pertaining to inclusive language, provide guidelines for providing culturally sensitive services, discuss the barriers that individuals frequently encounter when attempting to access healthcare, and detail strategies that healthcare providers can implement to help individuals overcome such barriers.

  • Available course offerings include but are not limited to:
  • Behavioral Health Services and the LGBTQ+ Community
  • Cultural Competence and Sensitivity in the LGBTQ Community
  • Safe Management of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, and Intersex Populations
  • Substance Use Disorder Treatment and the LGBTQ Community
  • Working More Effectively with the LGBTQ+ Community
Outcomes

Centurion recognizes the important role of correctional workers, including healthcare providers, in creating an environment that respects and protects the constitutional and human rights of the incarcerated LGBTQ+ community. By integrating information and education about LGBTQ+ individuals into our policies, practices, and organizational culture, our employees are equipped to not only meet the needs of these individuals in custody but also increase their own skill level and cultural competency. Diversity, equity, and inclusion training for serving the incarcerated LGBTQ+ community is and will remain a priority for Centurion across all of the programs we manage.
