Statement from Tom Fanning

Statement

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to guest host the business show “Squawk Box” on CNBC. The events of last weekend in Charlottesville were a topic of much discussion during the show.

What we saw in Charlottesville was deplorable. It was the worst of America. The violence, intolerance and racism on display have no place in our society, and hate of any kind must not be tolerated.

For Southern Company, diversity, inclusion and acceptance of our differences are more than words. They are central to Our Values and vital to our commitment to being a citizen wherever we serve.

As a company, and as a country, we are stronger when everyone, regardless of their differences, is encouraged and empowered to achieve their full potential. By embracing our differences, we increase our cultural bandwidth: our vision and courage to do the right thing, make the right decisions and remain a positive force in the communities where we live and serve.

Everywhere we go, and in everything we do, we define our company’s character. For more than a century, the Southern Company system has demonstrated a commitment to making our communities better off because we are there. As leaders in these communities, we must continue to demonstrate this commitment through not only our words but also our actions. I challenge each of you, in your own way, to lead by example.

Together, let us continue to lead on these issues and represent the best of America. Our communities, customers and fellow employees deserve nothing less.

I am proud to be on your team.
