Thoughts About the Events in Charlottesville

Statement from Paula Downey

As I reflect on the disturbing events in Charlottesville, I am deeply troubled by the hateful, racist and bigoted language that is counter to who we are and to the values we share as a company:

  • We are caring
  • We have humility
  • We have the courage to do the right thing
  • We keep our commitments
  • We are innovative and continuously pursue excellence
  • We are diverse and inclusive

These values set a strong foundation for how we do business, as well as how we treat each other, and some resonate particularly strongly with me right now.

As we consider current events, amid the hateful rhetoric, let us respond with compassion for one another.
In the face of divisiveness and polarization, let us respond by deepening our connections to each other and listening to one another’s stories.

And to address misunderstanding and ignorance, let us welcome and seek to understand new perspectives.
At CSAA Insurance Group, we want all employees to feel like they belong, bringing their whole selves to work. Our upcoming Diversity & Inclusion Week – with its range of inspiring events and activities across the enterprise, Aug. 28 – Aug. 31 – will be a great opportunity for us to connect with each other.

I also commend each of our Employee Resource Groups and Regional Diversity Councils for the work they do every day to support our culture and a sense of belonging. It is through working together and building up each other that we will truly succeed as human beings – and as a company.
