Response to 2020 Racial Tensions at The Container Store

Challenge

The Container Store is a company that has always strived to nurture an inclusive and caring culture where all employees are appreciated and valued; however, during the heightened racial tension of 2020 we realized we still have work to do.

Actions

The Container Store leadership team formed a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion task force to take a hard look at our company and practices. We started by surveying our Black employees and held round table group sessions with a racially diverse mix of employees to understand their feelings and experiences first-hand. We also talked with leaders from other companies about ways to hold ourselves accountable and create meaningful benchmarks. The outcome of this time resulted in a four-part action plan that was shared both internally and externally.

Outcomes

In the last year, we have made significant strides in our diversity, equity, and inclusion journey including hiring a Senior Director of DE&I, establishing a DE&I corporate strategy, launching employee resource groups, and hosting an inaugural DE&I product showcase where we sourced new products from minority-owned businesses. We remain committed to doing the necessary work to be a company whose workforce and supplier base reflects the communities where we live, work, and serve.

Quote

It is our responsibility as leaders to ensure our companies foster a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace. Therefore, I am thrilled to sign the CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusion pledge on behalf of The Container Store. Together we will pursue equal opportunities for all.
