Reducing our Carbon Footprint

Challenge

As a precious metals producer, Coeur Mining, Inc. has the unique opportunity to supply minerals that are essential to modern life and we are committed to doing this responsibly.  We are increasingly focused on reducing our climate impact, and this year released the significant, company-wide target to reduce the net intensity of our greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 25% by 2025.

Actions

Across our five mine sites, we have identified nearly 40 short-, medium- and long-term reduction plans to reach our GHG reduction target.  On July 1, 2021, we launched yet another initiative aimed at reducing our carbon footprint with the launch of Coeur’s Certified Carbon Offset program.

The new program mandates that credits be purchased by every Coeur Mining employee who travels by air for company business to compensate or offset the carbon dioxide or other GHG emissions equivalent to the personal carbon impact generated on any given flight.

To maximize the impact of this program, we have partnered with Sustainable Travel International, a certified organization that, like Coeur Mining, is also committed to supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The details of Coeur’s Certified Carbon Offset program include:

  • All company-wide email was shared with all employees to announce this new program
  • Links to our updated travel policy and FAQ document were provided to all employees
  • Travel approval process updated with an automated prompt to purchase offset credits
  • A quick link to Sustainable Travel International’s website was placed on our intranet site
Outcomes

The launch of the program has been a success, with offset travel credits now being purchased for employee business travel (and employees have the option to participate in this program for any personal travel as well!).

We will be tracking our company-wide contribution to Sustainable Travel International on a quarterly basis. And while the purchase of offset credits does not directly reduce GHG emissions for air travel, it does support projects that produce clean energy or achieve net carbon reductions in other ways.
