Recruiting Diverse Talent at Callan

Challenge

Finding diverse candidates in an industry that lacks diversity.

Actions

Implement diversity strategies to achieve recruitment goals.

Outcomes

Increased diversity at Callan.

Despite working in an industry known for its lack of diversity, Callan has found ways to uncover a pool of talented, diverse candidates. Because we aim to hire people from all walks of life, our clients benefit from the diversity of ideas, experiences, skills, and perspectives that each associate brings.

While Callan still has a lot to do to accomplish our diversity goals, we believe it is important to make clear that we are practicing what we preach. And it starts at the top with our gender-diverse senior management team.

Our recruitment strategies include:

  • Widening our hiring net to include those with non-traditional backgrounds (e.g., non-finance degrees for financial firms)
  • Partnering with United Way Bay Area and Summer Search to find candidates for our thriving internship program (we hire two interns a year into full-time roles)
  • Recruiting through university student and veteran groups to promote opportunities at Callan
  • Aligning with diversity organizations, such as the National Association of Securities Professionals, New America Alliance, and Robert Toigo Foundation
  • Offering family-friendly and flexible work programs

Quote

At Callan, we have found that providing a voice for each associate, listening to their diverse needs, and finding practical ways to honor those needs has created a culture that truly embraces a diversity of perspectives and nurtures each individual career path.
