Literacy Pittsburgh sought to respond to the civil unrest following the murder of George Floyd with more than just a statement.
The CEO sought volunteers to join a staff task force to explore ways the organization could further racial justice internally. The group developed a comprehensive list of areas where more work is needed, including hiring, retention, tutor training and support, culturally sensitive communication, staff engagement and training, and others. The group hired Racial Engagement Strategies to provide some basic training for the Task Force. After the training, the group agreed that a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access plan was the logical next step.
The Literacy Pittsburgh board of directors has created a DEIA Committee that includes staff, board, and external partners. The committee will develop the DEIA plan, monitor its implementation, and evaluate progress.
