Race in the Workplace at Tinuiti

Challenge

The company is committed to improving the percentage of minority employees, including at the management level. As an agency in the digital marketing space, the diversity numbers are similar to Tinuiti’s competitors. However, Tinuiti is committed to being a leader in this space, and recognition as a company of the actions necessary to improve the percentage of minority employees at the company.

Actions

During 2019 planning, the executive team aligned that D&I planning and strategy was an important strategic priority for 2020, including investment dollars, headcount, and action made toward the D&I efforts. At the beginning of 2020, members of the executive team hosted a roadshow in each Tinuiti office and held diversity focus groups in order to collect feedback and understand what employees feel needs improvement as it relates to the company’s diversity efforts. This data was utilized to start building a mission statement and action plan for Tinuiti to execute. Upon the death of George Floyd, the CEO made a public pledge to increase diversity and inclusion efforts throughout all of Tinuiti. He promoted a current employee into Tinuiti’s first dedicated Diversity & Inclusion role. Tinuiti accelerated the drafted D&I Action Plan with a commitment to double the percentage of black employee population at every level of the company over the next 3 years. The company hired a DEI Consultant to advise and enable the action plan and to identify any gaps. Tinuiti has also started the recruitment search for a senior D&I leader who will play a central role in driving an impactful DEI strategy at Tinuiti. Within the plan itself, the goals are set around hiring, celebrating and retaining diverse talent and how to accomplish those goals. This plan includes an audit of the hiring practices and implementation of a new training series centered around DEI for recruiters, managers and non-managers.

Outcomes

Tinuiti implemented this action plan in July 2020 and the team is already making progress. The recruitment team has been utilizing black talent networks and staffing agencies in order to attract more BIPOC candidates, the training series is in planning stages, and the company website and job boards are in the planning stage to reflect the inclusivity Tinuiti is committed to fostering. Employee engagement in the Diversity & Inclusion Committee has increased from 25 people to 85 people in 2020.
