Pro Bono Services

Challenge

Low-income individuals and nonprofit organizations often find themselves in need of expertise without the resources to pay for such services.

Actions

Stout has offered Pro Bono consulting services since 2008. We seek out opportunities to apply our skills, experience, and expertise in ways that can benefit low-income individuals and nonprofit organizations. Examples of services we have provided include: impact analysis for non-profit programs, legislative and policy research in support of low-income communities, budget development, cash flow forecasting and financial modeling for low-income entrepreneurs, assessment of internal controls for non-profit organizations, economic damage calculations and forensic accounting for low-income plaintiffs, expert witness testimony, internal investigations for non-profit organizations, and real property and business interest valuation services for low-income clients.

Pro Bono services are provided to the following groups:  (1) organizations that serve the interests of low-income individuals, (2) organizations or individuals advocating for public, civil, or human rights, (3) non-profit organizations that would not otherwise be able to afford professional services, or where the payment of fees for such services would significantly interfere with that organization’s mission, and (4) certain small for-profit businesses that cannot otherwise afford such services and seek to fulfill a commercial need in an economically challenged neighborhood or to serve low-income customers.

Outcomes

To date we have been engaged in over 175 pro bono matters and invested professional fees of over $6.4 million in our pro bono practice.  Our work has contributed to historic legislation involving rights to counsel for low-income tenants facing eviction, helped to secure millions of dollars of damages for survivors of human trafficking, assisted low wage workers in securing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages for underpayment, assisted low-income entrepreneurs with financial analyses to help sustain their businesses, developed strategies to improve civil access to justice, and many other positive outcomes for our clients.

Quote

Many of our clients have outstanding impact-focused missions, but they lack the money or expertise to achieve their goals. We launched our Pro Bono practice because we knew that giving our time and knowledge would help these organizations succeed. The results have been remarkable and show how lessening the resource burden can contribute to a broader impact for our communities.
