Challenge

In June of 2020, Twilio committed to becoming an antiracist company. The plan was to do and not just say. The executive team committed to and executed a number of company-wide actions known as the Racial Justice and Equity initiatives.

Actions and Outcomes

What are those Racial Justice and Equity initiatives?

  • Launching RiseUp, a cohort-based, targeted leadership development program for new Black and LatinX
    • Currently piloting this internal leadership development program with 16 US employees
    • Goal: Leadership Development and Career Accelerator for Black & Latinx Twilions
    • Benefits:
      • Robust career planning
      • Increased leadership and business exposure
      • Network of peers and leaders across Twilio
  • Instituting The Inclusion Rule, an internal recruitment policy to ensure a diverse slate of candidates
  • Expanding our BetterUp Coaching offerings to Black and LatinX Twilions in the US, with a focus on career planning and development.
    • 200+ employees included in pilot
    • Over 2,500 sessions as of April ‘21
    • 94% said their BetterUp sessions helped them be more effective at work
    • Saw significant 10+ point increases in “self-compassion,” “rest” and “alignment” as measured by post- session assessments
  • Running Hatch, a six month software engineering apprenticeship program open to individuals from nontraditional and underrepresented backgrounds.
    • 43 apprenticeships offered since program launch in 2017
    • 96% conversion rate to full time employees
    • Program pilots in Madrid and Bengaluru launching in 2021
  • Launching a Be Inclusive curriculum to build a common language around inclusion and support Twilions in mitigating their own
      • ~1500 employees have taken the training so far
