Month of Understanding

Challenge

Conning recognized that it is often difficult and uncomfortable for employees to discuss topics in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion realm at work. Many times, these conversations are complex and emotional, leading some to avoid these discussions.

Actions:

We have pledged to cultivate a workplace that supports open dialogue on complex, and sometimes difficult, conversations about diversity and inclusion. As part of our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, we provided several opportunities for employees to participate in a series of events and activities designed to help us explore our similarities and differences and create opportunities for meaningful dialogue.

Events included a workshop that explored how to use dialogue to help build relationships, deepen understanding, and foster a culture of inclusion, a panel discussion with SPECTRUM & Allies, a TED Talk about fighting bias, and a virtual keynote about advantage, disadvantage, and privilege.

Outcomes

Facilitating activities and workshops during the Month of Understanding (in 2021 and 2022) has helped to create an environment where employees are able to openly discuss complex topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
