Mobilizing Pillar Action Teams to Drive ID&E at Leggett & Platt

Challenge

We knew we wanted to initiate our first-ever Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (ID&E) efforts throughout our diversified and global organization. With 3 business segments, 15 business units, and 130 manufacturing facilities all over the world, our decentralized structure challenged us – how do we engage people, build awareness, and mobilize action? How do we do this thoughtfully without the expertise of an ID&E leader and/or team?

Action

With our CEO, CHRO, CFO, and a BU President leading the way, we engaged a cross-functional team of 30

employees from a variety of departments, locations, levels, and backgrounds to roll up their sleeves and launch our ID&E Strategy & Action Pillar Teams. We divided the work into five pillars, with teams of 4-5 chartered to lead each workstream:

  • Employee Communities
  • People Leadership & Education
  • Community Impact and Outreach
  • Accountability & Governance
  • Communications and Reputation

Each pillar team researched, benchmarked, crafted the scope of work, created project plans, and began working.

Outcomes

The Pillar Action Teams have been highly effective in driving engagement and launching several high-profile, high-impact initiatives:

  • Launched our first ID&E Survey across the organization and led the transparent sharing of the results.
  • Led a training RFP process and selected a partner to deliver Inclusive Leadership to 9000+ U.S. employees.
  • Developed our first ERG community.
  • Aligning philanthropy policies/guidelines and partnering with organizations to support historically underserved communities.
  • Created internal communications campaigns to build awareness of our ID&E strategy and priorities, as well as external social media storytelling that highlights our diverse talent.
  • Created our ID&E company goals and metrics, once we collected existing data on our workforce.

Our Pillar Action Teams are thriving 18 months later, and so are our ID&E efforts.
