Mitigating Bias Training

Challenge

Our organizational culture is the shadow of our leaders’ values and behaviors. Given this important responsibility, it’s important that we provide leaders with the tools to foster the environment we wish to have at Herman Miller.

Actions

We’re launching an enterprise-wide learning program focused on mitigating bias, in partnership with the NeuroLeadership Institute. This program will offer practical approaches to improving inclusion and diversity in organizations that also make us generally more effective, collaborative, and innovative. This program will help us transform the quality of our decision making by teaching us strategies to recognize and mitigate bias across the organization. This enterprise-wide roll out will start with executive level leadership and cascade to the business.

Outcomes

We expect to have team members who are better able to accept that their way of thinking is biased, label their bias, and leverage discussion guides and strategies that interrupt and mitigate bias. Assuming we have strong behavior change and systems to support that change, we should see greater employee inclusion, engagement, and retention; and we’ll ensure this through engagement scores and inclusion-related metrics.
