Message from Steve Steinour: Showing Respect for All People and Looking Out for People at All Times

Message

MAY. 29, 2020

Transcript of voicemail message from Steve Steinour to all colleagues on Friday, May 29, 2020.

Good morning, and Welcome. This is Steve.

First, I’d like to start with a thank you. I’m incredibly grateful for each of you and for your extraordinary work and dedication throughout the past few months.

As always, I’m especially proud of your commitment to our Purpose. Since we launched Category of One three years ago, you’ve embodied looking out for people through exceptionally kind, compassionate, thoughtful actions. You’ve changed lives and helped businesses — all of which strengthens our communities.

And in the face of this pandemic, your commitment to our Purpose has been consistently displayed in your behaviors. You’ve matched the moment by doing more, and being more, for our customers, with each other, and for those in our communities when they needed it most.

This unparalleled moment in our history has again reinforced that every person is precious and deserving of equal respect and treatment.

Across our nation’s communities, horrifying incidents, such as in Minneapolis, remind us of the ugliness that continues to infect our world and plague our society.

I am deeply disturbed.

I know some of you feel personally targeted by these appalling events simply because of who you are. You take another look over your shoulder or fear for your well-being in everyday situations when others wouldn’t give safety a single thought.

I’ll never experience this feeling. But know this: these unacceptable behaviors, this hateful way of thinking and acting will never be tolerated at Huntington. Welcome means Welcome for All. Always.

And I’m firmly committed to doing everything within my power to help. Each of us must ask ourselves the difficult question of what we are doing to condemn and stop prejudice and intolerance.

Now is the time to be kinder, show respect, listen with empathy, and seek different perspectives with an open mind and heart. To think about how we can make lives better for others. Now, more than ever, is our time to look out for people.

I also recognize that some of you know or may have lost loved ones to this vicious virus. Please know your grief is shared by us.

Moments matter. Big ones and small ones. As I’ve shared before, as our call-to-action, we must be intentional and take a moment to make a moment for someone else. Whenever, and however, we can, but doing so every day.

Because when we do this with each other, for our customers, and in our communities—even if what we’re doing feels small — our collective impact is huge. And together, we can change lives.

Together, we can change lives.

Have a great day.
