Mary T. Washington Wylie (MTWW) Alumni Community

Challenge

In 2013, ICPAS launched the MTWW Internship Preparation Program to provide diverse students, interested in accounting, with access to training and internships. After 7 years, 175 scholars participated, of which more than 85% accepted a placement opportunity. Despite the placement success, many MTWW program alumni and employers reported challenges these interns faced when transitioning into the workplace, such as cultural differences, sense of belonging, communication and time management skills. Though many alumni received and completed internships, some were not offered another internship or full-time job offer with the firm.

Actions

In 2019, ICPAS launched a MTWW Alumni Community and developed additional opportunities for this audience of diverse aspiring CPAs. This unique community was formed to connect participants from all seven classes and engage and support them with networking opportunities and professional development programs. ICPAS plans to help its alumni overcome challenges and celebrate successes together throughout all phases of their careers.

Outcomes

In 2019, ICPAS formed a MTWW Alumni Advisory Group with one scholar to represent each class. This small group is responsible for strengthening ties between MTWW alumni, contributing ideas, and feedback on how to best support the alumni community. ICPAS hosted the first-ever MTWW Alumni Reunion and MTWW Advancing Alumni Conference. The reunion, attended by 43 alumni, provided networking and bonding through game playing. The conference, attended by 24 alumni, provided techniques to help participants become more prepared, empowered, and encouraged at work. The agenda also included a discussion where MTWW alumni shared things they learned along their individual paths to becoming CPAs.
