Manager of Access Initiatives

Challenge

The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) seeks to create a model culture of belonging, which requires moving beyond compliance and towards creating the most disability-friendly historic art museum in the United States.

Actions

Through a previous capital campaign, TMA raised endowment funds to support infrastructure projects related to accessibility. In order to best utilize those funds, the Museum sought a joint venture with The Ability Center of Greater Toledo (ACT), whose vision to is to turn Toledo into the most disability-friendly community in the country. Given the alignment of institutional visions, ACT and TMA signed a multi-year memorandum of understanding to co-fund a new role, the Manager of Access Initiatives, whose job will entail a full audit of TMA’s operations and, with ongoing assistance from ACT, implementation of his/her/their recommendations using the existing endowment funds.

Outcomes

The partnership will be publicly announced on 2 February 2021 with a concurrent job posting for the Manager of Access Initiatives. The incumbent is expected to start in early Q2 2021 to help drive accessibility initiatives outlined in the Museum’s strategic plan.
