Living Our Values: DEIB in Action at LGA

Challenge

At LGA, we recognized that simply endorsing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) as abstract principles wasn’t enough. While we valued these ideals, the real challenge was finding ways to integrate them into the daily experiences of our team members. To truly “walk the talk,” we needed to go beyond surface-level efforts and implement actions that were meaningful.

Actions

In response, LGA launched initiatives designed to make DEIB personal, impactful, and relevant to our team members:

  1. Visit to Boston’s MLK Embrace Statue: This visit was an experience that allowed team members to reflect on the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The MLK Embrace Statue served as a powerful symbol of unity, love, and the ongoing fight for equality. It was a moment of collective reflection on the impact of Dr. King’s work and how we can continue to embody his values of justice, inclusion, and peace in both our professional and personal lives.
  2. Auschwitz Museum Visit: This visit was an emotional educational journey that highlighted the devasting effects of prejudice, hatred, and exclusion. Walking through the halls of the Auschwitz Museum, team members were confronted with the profound human impact of intolerance and discrimination. The experience challenged everyone to reflect deeply on the value of human dignity and the ongoing responsibility we each have to uphold and protect the rights of others, ensuring that history’s darkest moments are never repeated.
  3. LGA Office Film Showings:
    • Harriet: This film celebrated the remarkable leadership and resilience of Harriet Tubman, shedding light on her courageous efforts to fight for freedom and justice.
    • Smoke Signals: This film provided a unique and insightful perspective into the lives of Native Americans, particularly focusing on the complexities of growing up in modern-day America.
  4. LGA Gives Back Activities:
    • Read Across America: Visited Lowell Community Charter School to read books to children, inspiring a love of learning and community engagement.
    • Gregory O’Gorman Fundraiser: An annual collaboration with local accounting firms to honor the memory of Mr. O’Gorman and raise funds for cancer research.
    • Step Up for Colleen Walk/Run: Supporting this North Shore community event honors the legacy of a teacher whose life was tragically lost, promoting community solidarity and action.
    • Pine Street Inn: Supporting this organization reinforced our commitment to addressing homelessness and promoting compassion.
  5. Installation of Gender-Neutral Restrooms: A tangible step toward ensuring inclusivity and respect for all team members, reflecting our commitment to creating a welcoming environment.
Outcomes

Through these meaningful actions, LGA successfully transformed DEIB from abstract ideals into tangible, daily experiences for our team members. These initiatives have strengthened our team’s sense of connection, broadened perspectives, and deepened our commitment to creating an inclusive and compassionate workplace. This journey reflects our belief that embracing DEIB is not just a corporate responsibility but a human one!
