Challenge

To drive the organization forward, Preventing Discrimination and Harassment training has been deployed for all Varel team members; however, its contents is mostly concentrated on compliance requirements. For Varel to support a culture of belonging across the organization a more in-depth understanding, along with practical tools, is needed to cultivate connections.

Actions

In January 2022, Varel has partnered with a 3rd party provider to provide Unconscious Bias training to the People Leaders of our organization. The training content was sought out to support Varel’s leaders in learning how to identify attributes that lead to bias in the workplace, common causes of bias and how to overcome them as a people leader. Throughout the training, Varel’s People Leaders are empowered to choose empathy and curiosity to create an environment where all team members can perform at their best.

Outcomes

In addition to a structured Leadership Development Training Program at Varel, a portal was launched with up-to-date resources to guide change, progress and conversations. Varel’s People Leader’s also receive weekly newsletters (via email) with practical tips and advice to guide their everyday decisions. People Leaders have reported utilizing the tools to deepen their understanding of team member issues, hold one-on-one team meetings and guide their team to strive for results together.
