Issuing Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Statement and making unconscious bias training a free resource and part of our professional development curriculum.

Challenge

As a small, young company, we had never issued a formal statement on how we wanted to approach issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, nor taken concrete, company-wide actions to further DEI in our company.

Actions

We published a statement containing our aspirations for diversity, equity, and inclusion in recruiting, community engagement, investing, procuring goods and services, and other areas of our business. In the meantime, we have hired a consultant to help us follow through on our DEI pledge, and made unconscious bias training a free resource to our team and part of our professional development curriculum.

Outcomes

It is still early days for each of our three initiatives, but we already see some results. Many employees have positively reacted to our updated benefits, with several saying it has allowed them to procure more reliable childcare and achieve a more sustainable work-life balance. Similarly, several internal stakeholders have stated they appreciate a company of our size (<100 employees) is taking a proactive approach with respect to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion and that they are excited by the steps we have already taken.
