Introducing Election Day as a Paid Day of Purpose

Challenge

With racial inequities and social justice coming into focus across societies and corporations around the world, we took a hard look at how we put our beliefs about diversity, equity, and inclusion into practice. Putting emphasis on voting and empowering our employees to vote is the best way we can create social change to end racial injustice. Nobody should have to choose between getting paid, using paid time off, or exercising their right to vote.

Actions

On Juneteenth 2020, we announced that we are removing barriers to voting in the US by giving all our employees a paid day off on National Election Day. Globally, this was recognized as our first Day of Purpose, where all our team members around the globe had a paid day off to give back to a cause important to them.

Outcomes

Our 7,500+ employees around the globe participated in our first-ever Day of Purpose on November 3, 2020. Employees spent the day voting in the US election; collecting trash from parks, neighborhoods, and waterways; donating hundreds of pounds of food and clothing; giving blood; and many other creative acts of service.
