Inclusive Hiring Practices at Wiley

Challenge

To embrace inclusive hiring and onboarding practices that reduce bias and enable new colleagues to thrive in their careers. We also wanted to recruit diverse talent by partnering with organizations that manage large networks of qualified, diverse professionals, including those from underrepresented groups.

Actions

Now integrated into our regular processes, Wiley conducts inclusive language scans of job descriptions before posting them. The People Org reviews all resumes along multiple dimensions of diversity before forwarding them to hiring managers.

Additionally, we have developed partnerships with organizations to help us connect with diverse candidate pools

  • We partner with The Mom Project, which connects women re-entering the workforce with new career opportunities.
  • Wiley partners with Mathison, the largest diverse hiring network in the world, to gain access to a broad network of candidates of all backgrounds and experiences.
  • Leveraging our internal a talent acquisition platform, we work to find the best talent and make it easier for colleagues to apply for internal roles, creating equitable pathways for career development and colleague retention.
  • Our partnership with HBCU Connect gives Wiley access to the largest network of students and alumni from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the U.S. Wiley can connect with HBCU alumni and students and post on the platform’s job/internship database. We also launched an internship program for students of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in partnership with the Association of American Publishers and the United Negro College Fund
  • We helped launch the Wiley Diversity in Publishing Scholarship with PeduL, a scholarship resource for students to ensure equal access to academic and professional opportunities. Four graduating seniors will receive a $5,000 scholarship and an interview for a full-time role at Wiley.
Outcomes

Our partnership with the Mom Project has resulted in 200+ candidates and 6 offers. We have hired our first candidate from HBCU Connect.
