Inclusion Education and Training

Challenge

Research demonstrates that unconscious bias can be a significant obstacle to achieving inclusion in the workplace.

Actions

BD is in the process of launching Unconscious Bias training for the leadership team. This full-day training will include an explanation of the business case for inclusive leadership; help attendees recognize “micro-inequities” vs. valuing behavior; and teach how to role model Inclusive Leadership at BD.  Post-training feedback will be used to refine future sessions. This training will put BD cultural priorities into action, explain roots and impact of exclusion bias, and prompt participants to act each day to promote inclusion.

The training will then be rolled out broadly to locations across BD. The training is global, scalable, with flexible delivery platforms designed for every level of the organization. Within the next few years, all associates globally will participate in the training either in-person or virtually.

Outcomes

The desired outcomes are:

  • Help build a culture of inclusion.
  • Enable healthy, respectful dialogue between people at every level of the organization.
  • Create a sense of accountability for every associate to encourage and further inclusion.

Empower advocates to serve as role models of inclusive leadership for others at BD.

Quote

Diversity and inclusion are inherent in BD’s values, most notably “We do what is right” and “We respect, collaborate, challenge and care about each other.” We were eager to join the CEO Action effort so that we could partner with other companies to further diversity and inclusion in the workplace.  At BD, we realize that we succeed by valuing and leveraging the unique abilities, backgrounds, experiences and perspectives that every associate brings to our organization. Inclusion and diversity are extremely important to BD and a driver of our future success in understanding patient and customer needs.
