Inclusion Cruiser

Challenge

Increase the company's effectiveness in sharing Ameren’s corporate diversity and inclusion strategy with co-workers who have less exposure to it on a day-to-day basis, specifically those located away from the St. Louis general office building.

Actions

In 2016, Ameren introduced the Inclusion Cruiser – a vehicle experience designed to promote active learning and encourage dialog at Ameren work locations across Missouri and Illinois. The focus for the first year of the Inclusion Cruiser was a learning program that shares the work of Ameren's Employee Resource Groups. A team selected the vehicle that best fit the learning need, designed the layout, selected the materials and equipment to be used, designed internal and external graphics to enhance interest and learning, and oversaw the development of video programming.

Outcomes

The Inclusion Cruiser has traveled more than 2,500 miles across the Ameren service territory, made 21 visits to sites in Illinois and Missouri, and welcomed more than 400 visitors.

Quote

A culture that strongly embraces diversity and inclusion enables us to better understand and meet the needs of our diverse customer populations, enhances engagement among our co-workers that drives innovative solutions to meet our customer’s energy needs and expectations, as well as helps us recruit and retain the best talent. We have seen the positive impact of our own efforts at Ameren, and that’s why we specifically developed training to help co-workers increase their comfort level in having conversations about diversity and inclusion. When co-workers are able to bring their true selves to work each and every day we have a better outcome for our business. I encourage other CEOs in our region to learn more and sign the pledge. Working together, we can build stronger and more inclusive communities where everyone prospers.
