Implicit Bias Training

Challenge

We recognize that implicit bias is a prevalent and often unconscious phenomenon that can shape how we perceive and evaluate others. These biases, rooted in stereotypes or preconceived notions, can influence our judgments and interactions even before we meet someone. Understanding the presence and impact of implicit bias is crucial to fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment, as it allows us to challenge these automatic assumptions and approach others with greater awareness and objectivity.

Actions

We invited Dr. Bryant Marks, a national thought leader and trainer in diversity, equity, and anti-bias research and mitigation, to conduct a two-part workshop. The focus was on empowering each of us to reduce bias within our processes at HR Acuity. Following the webinar, we held team meetings to debrief on the insights gained and to brainstorm ideas for continuing our learning journey. Additionally, seeing the value Dr. Marks brought to our team internally, we invited him to lead a session at our annual industry roundtable consisting of 120 employee relations professionals.

Outcomes

By empowering employees to recognize and mitigate their own biases, the organization can foster a more supportive and diverse environment. This can lead to improved team collaboration, higher employee satisfaction, and better decision-making processes.

Quote

Organizations diverse in people and thought have a greater competitive edge. But diversity itself isn’t enough. Equity and belonging are essential components. Fostering an environment where all can bring their authentic selves—without fear of exclusion—requires continuous commitment. Implicit bias trainings are just one of our many initiatives to uncover and address unconscious attitudes that can influence decision-making, behaviors, and interactions in the workplace.
