Implicit Associations and Unconscious Bias Learning

Challenge

Exposing a broader audience below the leadership ranks to implicit cognition and unconscious bias learning.

Actions

Each year, our newly promoted managers and senior managers participate in a plenary session with Dr. Mahzarin Banaji, a Professor of Social Ethics in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University, on the pervasive role that implicit cognition and unconscious biases can play in our everyday actions and behaviors. Dr. Banaji convincingly illustrates, through her extensive research and hands-on demonstrations, how our minds work in social interactions, especially mental processes that operate outside our conscious awareness and control.  She demonstrates, using classic methods of cognitive and social psychology how our minds can lead us away from our own intentions to be fair.

Outcomes

Dr. Banaji has presented to thousands of EY leaders through various venues, including over 21,000 newly promoted managers and experienced hire managers since 2008.
