I Am L3Harris

Challenge

In an effort to celebrate and highlight the diversity and achievements of our employees, we previously featured volunteers from employee resource groups (ERGs) in spotlight galleries during appropriate heritage and inclusion months. However, spotlight galleries were limited to a low word count and provided no metrics on user engagement. They also required significant time to develop and there was a high possibility of inadvertently tokenizing participants.

Actions

To engage employees on a personal level and showcase the intersectionality of our employees, we transformed the spotlight galleries into personal storytelling through the I Am L3Harris stories. Employees self-nominate, eliminating the risk of tokenizing participants, and share a story about one of five themes: culture, career, innovation, life and courage. These authentic and courageous stories are some of our most engaging content internally on our employee intranet and externally on our social media channels. We have featured authentic stories from employees on a variety of themes including stories about single working parents, immigration, Black history and the LGBTQ+ community.

Outcomes

Over 30 I Am L3Harris stories have been published since the initiative launched in late 2020, increasing visibility into our employees’ diverse identities and experiences and providing potential employees an insight into the company culture. Stories average ~3500 unique views and consistently generate higher than average likes and comments.

When every employee feels welcome to share their thoughts and is empowered to perform their best work, we thrive and achieve better results as a company. Diversity alone is not enough. We strive to create an inclusive environment where each employee’s voice is heard so everyone, no matter their education, experience, gender, race or ethnicity – feels confident to contribute their ideas.
