Hosting Quarterly Unconscious Bias Learning Sessions

Challenge

Centurion is committed to cultivating a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion in which the unconscious becomes conscious. Given that unconscious bias and all related prejudice are known to impair the workplace, we are intentional about providing a safe place for our staff to acknowledge their biases as well as obtain tools and approaches to modify thought patterns with the goal of reducing biases through increased understanding, changed behavior, and open minds.

Actions

Powered by the Elevate program of Centurion University, our quarterly “Uncovering Blindspots: Unconscious Bias, Macro and Micro Aggressions” learning sessions help us to address the consciousness of every employee through candid conversations and shared experiences. Participants regularly report a positive session experience and great session value.

Outcomes

Our quarterly Unconscious Bias learning sessions help us to address the consciousness of every employee through candid conversations and shared experiences. Participants join our acclaimed presenters for the interactive learning sessions in which, over the course of 2.5 hours, they explore a multidimensional approach to diversity, the roles of biases, and what we all can do in our daily lives to make the unconscious conscious.

Together, we discuss shared experiences and the power of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our daily lives. In the words of our participants, here are some ways we can all make the unconscious conscious:

  • Respect people as people
  • Be intentional about being an ally
  • Be mindful of stereotypes
  • Look at the full picture of life
  • Speak truth to power
  • Be proactive in recognizing and counteracting unconscious bias
  • Keep an open mind and heart
  • Be aware of your words and actions
  • Focus on dignity and respect for all
  • Know when to step up and step in
  • Foster a safe space at all times

In 2021, Elevate focused on understanding empathy and challenging our perspectives and ideals by realizing our social blind spots regarding diversity and racial disparities. In 2022, Elevate added a financial wellness series to its regularly scheduled programming to meet more and different employee needs. The session schedule includes:
