Herbalife's Response to 2020 Racial Tensions

Challenge

As a global nutrition company in more than 90 countries, our commitment to improving lives and our communities has remained at the core of everything we do. We have always been an incredibly dynamic company. Our employees and independent distributors each come to Herbalife from diverse backgrounds and walks of life. We work together to take meaningful actions and a clear stance against racism in order to achieve our shared goals of equality, inclusion and change in our communities.

Actions

Following the social unrest in 2020, our CEO released a number of public statements and internal communications expressing the need for us to reflect, engage in candid conversations, and always speak out against racism. Soon after, we engaged several global leaders in an all-employee town hall panel discussion, where they shared an honest, critical self-evaluation of their understanding of racism and the “Black Lives Matter” movement. Over 2,500 employees tuned in to our live town hall addressing Current Events and Race, exceeding our 2020 average viewership by almost 20%. We received tremendous feedback from our employees, 98% of whom responded with positive feedback on the candid conversations led by our executives.

Following the discussion, we published our DEI strategy and information on our employee networks on our company’s DEI intranet, so employees can stay up to date on the important work we’re doing to immerse our DEI strategy into our day-to-day operations. We’ve committed more resources, staff, and budget to the DEI function so we can have systems and processes in place to support our values and ensure our progress towards a more inclusive workplace is sustainable.

Outcomes

With the increased budget, we were able to hire an external DEI consultant, who provided a foundational framework and strategy. We are also now able to fund events and activities led by our employee networks. With the added staff and resources, we have been able to analyze the make-up of our workforce, expand our employee networks, train leaders on unconscious bias and inclusive leadership, and engage employees in meaningful conversations. We have also established a Global DEI Council, with representation from each of our regions, to create organizational goals around DEI, measure our progress, and remove barriers to success.

This blog from our CEO was shared on our global corporate site and shared with employees.
