Gender Strategies at Tronox

Challenge

Workforce Reflective of Community.

Actions
  • Created partnerships with trade schools in regions where we operate to promote and educate students on our processes and career opportunities. In Stallingborough, UK, we have been industry partners with Engineering Northern Lincolnshire University Technical College (ENLUTC) since 2016. A member of the Tronox L&D team was seconded to ENLUTC for a full academic year, to teach engineering to the students. We have mentored students, created projects for the students, delivered staff outset days for UTC staff to build their understanding of Tronox, hosted student visits to site, assisted with interview techniques & guaranteed interviews to students for apprentice positions.
  • Sponsored the first internship program for female students in the local universities in the community of our manufacturing plant in Yan bu, Saudi Arabia. The program was a massive success and received great feedback from both Tronox managers and students involved as well as the university we collaborated with. Students are required to complete an internship as part of their degree requirements. At Tronox, the students were partnered with mentors to gain experience through involvement with day to day activities and projects.
  • Intentional hiring and strategic alignment and development of our leaders on the Executive Team.
  • As part of our annual Promotion and Progression in 2021, we conducted a Gender/Minority Pay Equity Review. This included a gender pay gap analysis for each country where we operate and a minority pay gap analysis for US and South Africa (data not available for other countries). Data was sorted by country, geo-pay structure, job family and global grade. Date of last promotion, level of experience and performance were taken into consideration to determine action needed.
Outcomes
  • Hired first females in our maintenance organizations in three of our manufacturing plants.
  • In Yanbu, out of the 8 ladies that joined the internship program, 3 continued to be contractors in Tronox (2 in HR and 1 in Supply Chain), and 2 became official employees in Finance.
  • Increased female representation by nearly 20% on the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Pay Equity analysis completed and adjustments made.
