Fresenius Medical Care’s Journey to Cultural Competency

Challenge

At Fresenius Medical Care, we understand factors such as race, gender, sexual orientation, immigration status, income and education can significantly influence access to timely, appropriate and high-quality care. Our commitment to health equity means expanding our knowledge and cultural competency in order to effectively serve our culturally diverse patients. This also involves eliminating barriers that prevent our patients from accessing optimal services and treatment options available such as transplant and home therapy. In March 2024, Fresenius Medical Care launched its new Journey to Cultural Competency training for our U.S based clinical staff. The program focuses on cultural humility, trust and inclusion, unconscious bias and social determinants of health. It reinforces our commitment in creating a culture that values effective cross-cultural interactions, policies and attitudes putting our patients first. As part of the training plan, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion department partnered with the Clinical Services team to drop-in sessions for staff to ask questions and provide feedback. Journey to Cultural Competency has been well-received and highly adopted by direct patient care teams and other departments at Fresenius Medical Care.
