Fostering Inclusion With Culture Playbooks

Challenge:

NCCI started its journey to educate the organization on Inclusion and Diversity by establishing a common understanding of unconscious bias and its impact in the workplace. To make further strides in our culture, especially with the inclusion challenges associated with working in a hybrid workplace, it was recognized that our strategy needed to move from foundational education to guidance on translating awareness into new behaviors and practices.

Actions:

A one-stop-shop culture site called Culture@ Playbooks was developed with practical dos and don’ts and actions for working inclusively in a hybrid environment. The Playbooks are available for all employees but are highly relevant for managers who play a key role in driving our culture. A manager-only portion was created on the site, which includes a brief team assessment, the Team Health Monitor, for identifying inclusion opportunities and corresponding team activities. A manager training was conducted to prepare managers for engaging in productive and safe team dialogue around the survey results and actions for improvement.

Outcomes:

The first Playbook, Hybrid Team Meetings and Communication, was launched mid-September 2022 and has been accessed by about 40% of the company. Feedback has been highly favorable regarding the site, assessment, and resources for improving individual and team effectiveness. Additional Playbooks will be developed to focus on inclusion in hybrid areas, including engagement, productivity, connection, and collaboration.

Fostering a diverse, inclusive environment is the responsibility of every employee, especially those in leadership roles. Putting these Playbooks in their hands empowers them to take action to drive cultural change across the organization.
