Fostering Inclusion With a Comprehensive Communication Strategy

Challenge:

Over the past few years, NCCI has embarked on a journey to ensure that its practices, processes, and programs continue to be inclusive and promote multifaceted diversity across the organization. As a result, the company implemented several initiatives and programs and established a more comprehensive and ongoing communication strategy along with a coordinated tactical plan to further NCCI’s Inclusion and Diversity (I&D) efforts.

Actions:

A comprehensive I&D communication strategy was initiated in 2022 as part of NCCI’s corporate goals. The purpose of this strategy was to inform employees and external stakeholders about NCCI’s I&D activities and to help facilitate their engagement and support over time. The multiyear strategy covers three main categories: (1) having a consistent way of messaging NCCI’s strategic emphasis on inclusion and diversity; (2) centralizing the information, tools, and resources for our employees and managers to support better access and engagement; and (3) building the understanding of NCCI’s approach to I&D with our external stakeholders.

Outcomes:

Three outcomes were achieved in 2023 from the plan. The first outcome was the creation and publication of NCCI’s I&D core statement: We come from diverse backgrounds, so our commitment to inclusion is what brings us together to work as one.The second outcome was the development and publication of an internal I&D-focused website for all employees and an I&D-dedicated page on NCCI’s public website. Engagement with the sites has been positive. Since their launch in September 2023, the internal site has been accessed by over 30% of employees, and the external site has recorded over 280 page-access instances. Finally, the third outcome was the development of an Inclusive Leadership Playbook to support managers in their leadership journey, adding to the Culture@ Playbooks library, which has been accessed by nearly 50% of the organization. NCCI plans to continue implementing this comprehensive communication strategy in 2024 with additional initiatives.

I&D communication is more important than ever. Our I&D communication strategy informs our employees and external stakeholders about what we have achieved, where we are going, and important milestones along the way.
