ERGs at Sensata

Challenge

Ensure employees have to communities within Sensata where they can feel safe, gain support from colleagues that identify or ally with them, and ensure equitable access to personal and professional development.

At its core, Sensata’s culture is about collaborative problem solving. Our success is based on global, diverse teams coming together to solve some of our customers’ toughest challenges; we design, develop and deliver mission-critical, cannot fail applications that make our world safer, cleaner, more efficient – and in recent years, more electrified and connected.

Problem solving leads to significantly better results when diverse perspectives, mindsets and experiences are included. This is why DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) is not only a business imperative but also core to our culture at Sensata. DEI isn’t new at Sensata. We have a long history of supporting employee initiatives, including those representing women and other minority groups. As our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion journey matures, our approaches to supporting these programs will continue to evolve as well. Aligned with this new approach, in 2021 we evolved from “Affinity Groups” to “Employee Resource Groups (ERGs),” which is the more commonly referred term, with executive sponsorship from our Strategy Leadership Team (SLT) for each ERG.

Actions

Implemented greater structure, access and support through a transition from Affinity Groups to Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) aligned to and empowered by executive sponsors.

The purpose of this change is to empower ERGs to have a greater impact on making progress company-wide – contributing to professional development, connectivity and networking, strategic partnering to positively affect business results. Each Executive Sponsor was provided with a toolkit and a list of roles and responsibilities during their 2-year term to have the greatest impact.

Outcomes

Increased in ERGs from 2 to 10 in the first two years; greater awareness of ERGs for employees globally.

Qualitatively, our focus on DEI has in part led to a much-improved corporate culture where employees have greater trust in leadership and feel that they belong. We created a structure to ensure Employee Resource Groups were sustainable, resulting in the number of groups increasing from 2 to 10 in the first 2 years. Membership in each ERG continues to grow as more ERG-led events and programs take place. In Spring 2022, we hosted an ERG fair for our employees to showcase our global and office-specific ERGs, their executive sponsors and leaders.
