Engaging Team Members to Drive a Culture of Inclusion and Belonging

Challenge

Sun recognized the opportunity to leverage team member-led engagement by forming a dedicated group to provide critical input that would further drive our diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. This effort aimed to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment that not only supports diversity but also strengthens organizational culture, encouraging everyone to contribute authentically. The group needed to represent the unique perspectives and diverse backgrounds of our team members and individuals across the company to ensure all voices and perspectives were included in the work Sun was doing.

Actions

IDEA Council

Sun’s inaugural IDEA Council was formed in 2021, which is comprised of members of varying roles, geographical locations, racial and ethnic backgrounds, education, and experiences. The council meets monthly to support Sun’s IDEA focus, share knowledge and experiences to help shape decision making, act as an extension of all voices throughout the company, and ensure inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility are the foundation of all that Sun does.

Outcomes

Since formation, the group has established a mission, purpose, and pillars to guide their actions. The council actively continues to provide input on programs and processes, while also supporting the execution of initiatives, both individually and collectively, by collaborating with various departments across the company to ensure alignment and successful implementation.

Following the council formation, Sun launched two additional engagement avenues to capture the spirit of our team and create spaces for all team members to come to network by connecting with others who may have a similar background or experience and create a better sense of community and support. These include:

  • Voices of Sun
    • Voices of Sun is a video series featuring Sun team members sharing their lived, individual experiences. This not only encourages personal growth but also allows for a more cohesive, supportive work environment. By sharing our stories, we learn from each other, celebrate our differences, and create a more empathetic and aligned team. Everyone’s voice matters.
  • Sun Resource Groups (SRGs)
    • Sun Resource Groups were created as a space for team members with shared interests, identities or lived experiences to come together. Led by executive sponsors, the groups focus on networking, education through internal and external speakers, cultural or significant celebrations for the broader company to participate in and supporting business initiatives. The first groups created support women, veterans, the LGBTQ+ community, allies and welcome all team members to join. These have been successful drawing in more than 100+ team members.
