Employee Resource Groups: Capital Communities

Challenge

After an internal assessment and increased awareness around higher attrition rates for women, we set out to enhance our associates’ sense of belonging by creating forums for them to come together, share similar interests and learn about those that are different.

Actions

Capital Communities unite our people and help to develop our collective empathy through unfiltered conversations about race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, faith, disabilities, mental health and so much more. They are associate led, which enables them to focus on goals, objectives and events (e.g., speaker events, discussion forums and coffee chats) that are meaningful to their members. All our Capital Communities are open to anyone interested in participating and provide benefits such as greater connection, development and networking and ally-ship opportunities.

Outcomes

Since launching the first Capital Community five years ago, we’ve seen a significant positive impact on our associates and increased collaboration across our Communities to address topics relevant to broad audiences. As of June 2020, we have over 40 Capital Communities with chapters present in offices across North America, Europe and Asia.

Capital Communities drive associate engagement, with 65% of associates currently involved in one or more Community. These act as both a resource for members and a resource for business leaders as they help accelerate our Diversity & Inclusion objectives around Racial Equity, Talent Acquisition, Talent Development and Engagement.
