Education for Inclusive Workplace Culture

Challenge

In our effort to access the wealth of perspectives available in untapped and underrepresented talent, we realize that an inclusive culture is essential.  As a professional membership association, we place great value on member education.  Our goal is to increase awareness that diversity, equity, and inclusion are not synonymous, and to enhance members’ understanding of how to leverage diversity through inclusive workplace cultures.

Actions

Launch and maintain a dynamic, comprehensive DEI platform accessible to members through our website.  The platform provides a variety of learning content for individuals at any level in an organization, at any stage of DEI, and appeals to multiple learning styles.

  • Partner with Blue Ocean Brain to deliver a customized interactive microlearning platform. The platform helps member firms enhance their DE&I knowledge and provide actionable tools to implement and share.
  • Compile and maintain a toolkit of inclusion themed resources to help members explore various diversity, equity, and inclusion topics by month, for individual learning and team discussions.
  • Curate a library of images and narratives which members can use on their own LinkedIn and Twitter profiles to help raise awareness and celebrate diversity.
Outcomes

WSIA members are engaging the resources, and we have enhanced our WSIA committee volunteer expectations to include completion of unconscious bias training through the microlearning platform.

The wholesale, specialty and surplus lines insurance segment’s most valuable assets are its talented human resources. As a growing industry supporting a diverse range of insurance buyers, attracting and developing a diverse range of talented industry professionals is paramount, which is why we incorporated the WSIA Diversity Foundation in 2020 and why we are investing in and promoting the value of diversity, equity and inclusion within our association and industry. An inclusive industry and workplace culture is vital to attracting and retaining this diverse range of talent.
